The Golden Hoosier

We come here almost weekly, and it’s one of the few places where my partner (celiac) can fully relax into the experience. The staff understands gluten-free dining in a way that feels consistent and informed—not just accommodating, but practiced. You can ask questions without feeling like you’re over-explaining, which makes a big difference.

From a safety standpoint, this is one of the more reliable kitchens we’ve found locally. Fries are cooked in a dedicated fryer, and the team is clear about what is and isn’t safe. Most of the menu can be made gluten-free with a bun swap, including their core smash burgers and several sandwiches. The fried chicken sandwich and fried cod are both safe options, which is notable since those are often off-limits elsewhere. There are a few wing sauces and seasonings that are not gluten-free, so it’s worth confirming when ordering, but staff are always happy to walk through it.

We’ve tried branching out, but this is really a smash burger spot at heart. My partner sticks with the Hoosier burger, and it’s consistently excellent. I tend to gravitate towards the Diablo burger and the rosemary fries, which are a standout. We recently tried the fried chicken and cod sandwiches—both good—but ultimately came back to what they do best.

The atmosphere adds to the experience. Inside is dark and cozy, while the back patio is designed to feel like a Missouri state park, complete with wooden shelters and a campfire ring. It’s heated in colder months and dog-friendly year-round, which makes it an easy place to linger.

Happy hour (Monday–Friday, 11–6) includes a small selection of discounted apps and drinks, including a reliably good spicy margarita.
